Nation of Lifesavers Scavenger Hunt

Friday, October 16 to Sunday October 25

Purpose

Help raise awareness of CPR, AEDs and cardiac emergency preparedness in your community. Visit local businesses, places of worship, schools and other community organizations to discover how prepared they are to respond to a cardiac emergency and spark conversations that could help save lives. This activity is intended to educate and raise awareness and is not a formal assessment or compliance audit.

Rules of Play

  • Participate in pairs or groups. All students must submit the Heart Club consent form (heart.org/consent)
  • Visits may take place between October 16-25.
  • During visits, introduce yourself as a member of your school's American Heart Association Heart Club and explain that you are participating in a preparedness scavenger hunt, not conducting an inspection or compliance audit.
  • Be respectful of staff, visitors and property.
  • Only ask questions if staff are available and willing to participate.
  • Do not enter restricted areas.
  • Take photos only where permitted.
  • Submit one Form report for each location visited.

Prizes

Each location visit with a completed Form submission earns 1 point.

1st Place: 3 CPR Anytime Kits, 25 wristbands and 9 Heart Association lapel pins

2nd Place: 2 CPR Anytime Kits, 15 wristbands and 6 Heart Association lapel pins

3rd Place: 1 CPR Anytime Kit, 10 wristbands and 3 Heart Association lapel pins

Step 1: Get Ready

Review the activity with your Heart Club, obtain advisor approval, ensure participating students have submitted consent forms and identify locations in your community to visit.

Optional: Watch the 9/11 Day of Remembrance Nation of Lifesavers Webinar together to hear from a cardiac arrest survivor and the everyday hero who saved his life, learn Hands-Only CPR and understand why cardiac emergency preparedness matters.

Step 2: Get Set

Assign locations to pairs or groups of students, designate a location lead and JotForm submitter for each visit, set a club goal and create a schedule for site visits.

Optional: Visit NEAR Registry | National Emergency AED + Resource (NEAR) Registry and learn how AED locations are mapped to help improve access to lifesaving devices during emergencies. Download the NEAR Registry app.

Step 3: Go Hunt!

Between October 16-25, visit your assigned locations, look for AEDs, ask the preparedness questions included in the JotForm, and submit one JotForm report for each location visited. If you speak with a manager or staff member, let them know by providing you with their email address they will receive a one-time follow-up email with cardiac emergency preparedness resources from the American Heart Association.

Optional: Use the National Emergency AED + Resource (NEAR) Registry App to upload a picture of any AEDs you spot at the location.

Step 4: Celebrate!

Track your club's progress on the Discord leaderboard, share your experience on social media, and celebrate helping build a Nation of Lifesavers. The Heart Clubs with the most points will earn prizes and recognition.

Remember: Every location visited helps raise awareness of CPR, AEDs and cardiac emergency preparedness in your community. Together, we can help create a Nation of Lifesavers!
