Remembering Dr. Eugene Braunwald

The American Heart Association honors the extraordinary legacy of Eugene Braunwald, M.D., widely regarded as the father of modern cardiology. Dr. Braunwald passed away April 22, 2026, at age 96.
For more than seven decades, Dr. Braunwald transformed how heart disease is understood, studied and treated, helping save countless lives around the world. His groundbreaking discoveries reshaped cardiovascular medicine and continue to guide care for patients and families today.
Dr. Braunwald was a lifelong force within the American Heart Association, advancing its research and scientific mission while mentoring generations of investigators, clinicians and leaders. In recognition of his commitment to developing people as well as ideas, the Association established the Eugene Braunwald Academic Mentorship Award in 1999, celebrating excellence in teaching and mentorship that carries his influence forward through future generations.
In honor of Dr. Braunwald's extraordinary impact, the American Heart Association is establishing a memorial fund to support cardiovascular research and ensure his legacy continues to change lives.
