I came to the American Heart Association looking for a job. I found a calling. This is the place where I can use my interests, my talents and my creativity to make a difference in people’s lives every day.
Things are always changing at the American Heart Association. That is the most exciting aspect of the work for me. It can also be the most challenging. I have often been asked to participate on teams or groups that are shaping a new direction for a department or creating a new initiative for the organization. This has afforded me the opportunity to work side by side with our national leadership — both staff and volunteers — who have taught me much.
We tend to have very caring, fun-loving staff and volunteers in this organization, and it’s great to work with them. While we’re dedicated to the work, we also find time to enjoy each other personally. We laugh and cry together, and share in our successes and failures.
While I’m provided the parameters and guidance I need, I’m also given the freedom to be creative and to use my own skills and judgment on a day-to-day basis. I feel I have a voice in the management of the organization and that my opinion matters. My experience and past success is recognized and appreciated by my supervisor and my colleagues.
