What We Do in Minnesota

Building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.
The American Heart Association is working to improve the cardiovascular health of ALL Americans by 20% while reducing deaths from cardiovascular disease and stroke by 20% by the year 2020.

Fewer people are dying from heart disease and stroke, but improving the cardiovascular health of ALL Americans has had mixed results - obesity among adults, and physical activity and cholesterol for kids.

Our My Heart. My Life.TM prevention platform includes:

  • Teaching Gardens to encourage school children to eat more fruits and vegetables
  • Cooking Classes to help parents prepare healthy meals for their families
  • Heart Walks to celebrate healthy lifestyles and fund research and health initiatives
  • Reducing sodium and sugar-sweetened beverages as personal choices and default options in the community.

Reichen Farmington MN

Six-year-old Reichen, of Farmington, had a stroke before birth because his mom was allergic to an element in his blood.

Medical advances have protected his little sister from a similar stroke.

Reichen and his family are long-time Heart Walk volunteers, raising awareness that stroke can impact even children.
