Please come share your story and be considered as one of the national 2013-2014 Go Red For Women faces. Go Red For Women’s Western New York casting call, hosted by Catholic Health, will take place on Thursday, April 18th beginning at 4:30 PM. The casting call is followed by a special presentation by Catholic Health titled “New Ways to Manage Your AFib” from 5:30-7:30 PM. If selected, these women may be involved in a variety of Go Red For Women efforts such as national media, PSAs, website content, brochures, news features and events. Western New York Women Speak Up for Their Hearts at the 2013 Go Red For Women Luncheon

More than 200 local women filled the ballroom at the Hyatt Regency in Downtown Buffalo on Valentine’s Day in honor of the American Heart Association’s annual Go Red For Women Luncheon. Ladies were in a “sea of red” to help raise critical funds in the fight against heart disease and stroke. The 2013 luncheon was chaired by Joyce Markiewicz, CEO and President of Catholic Health Homecare, emceed by WKBW TV’s Joanna Pasceri, sponsored nationally by Macy’s and Merck and sponsored locally by Catholic Health.

As guests arrived at the Women’s Wellness Exhibit, they were greeted with a reusable shopping bag, sponsored by Independent Health. Before the luncheon got underway, attendees had the opportunity to pamper themselves with mini manicures and hand massages, take advantage of screenings from Independent Nursing Care, and enjoy a healthy cooking demonstration.

All guests had an opportunity to take a photograph that demonstrates a promise to love their heart and start living a healthier lifestyle. The photo booth was sponsored by GM Powertrain and will be sent to the participants as a reminder of their promise.

The American Heart Association presented the Heroine of the Heart award to volunteer and advocate, Annette Adamczak. Annette has trained more than 4,500 Western New York High School students in the American Heart Association’s Hands-Only CPR and she will be doubling that number by this spring. Annette wants to create a generation of lifesavers by ensuring the passage of legislation that would require CPR familiarization for all high school students before they graduate. She does all of this in her daughter’s name – Emily Rose. Emily’s life was cut short in June of 2009 when she suffered a cardiac arrest. Annette received her award to a standing ovation where she encouraged guests to become heart heroes and learn CPR.

Western New York Survivor Gallery, sponsored by Catholic Health:

More than 42 million women in the United States are living with at least one kind of cardiovascular disease. In fact, more women die of heart disease than all forms of cancer combined. Unfortunately, the killer isn’t as easy to see. Heart disease is often silent, hidden and misunderstood.

In an effort to increase awareness, Catholic Health, WKBW-TV and the American Heart Association announced that they are teaming up for Western New York Goes Red, part of the national Go Red For Women campaign.

“More women die of cardiovascular disease than the next five causes of death combined,” said Jason Jankowiak, VP of Cardiac Services at Catholic Health. “This partnership gives women throughout the region the chance to prevent heart disease and stroke, and tools to live longer, stronger lives.”

A highlight of the announcement was the launch of a traveling survivor gallery featuring seven local women.
