Greater Phoenix Hispanic Check for Life
A Barber/Beauty Shop Blood Pressure Screening Program
Check for Life is a blood pressure screening program in which barbers/hairdressers serving a predominantly Hispanic clientele are trained by nurses from the National Association of Hispanic Nurses to check their client’s blood pressure. They are also trained to provide brief responses based on an individual’s blood pressure reading. Wallet sized tracking cards are provided to clients that can be updated with each visit. Information on how to reduce blood pressure and live a healthy lifestyle is also provided to clients.
The American Heart Association and the National Association of Hispanic Nurses provide everything needed for the program including training, equipment, tracking cards, educational materials, and posters that can be displayed at the shops. Nurses from the National Association of Hispanic Nurses visit each shop monthly to provide additional materials, collect data, and provide support and training as needed.

Barbers/hairdressers keep a record of the number of people screened and the number of elevated readings. Barbers/hairdressers also attend continuing education workshops throughout the duration of the program.
