Teaching Garden to Benefit Nora Students

Updated:May 23,2014

Nora Teaching Garden 2014INDIANAPOLIS (Wednesday, May 21, 2014) – Students at Nora Elementary School planted an American Heart Association Teaching Garden, giving the kids a real-life laboratory to learn and experience healthy eating.

The Teaching Garden features 10 raised beds planted with vegetables and herbs. Funded by Capital Group, it is the ninth American Heart Association Teaching Garden in metro Indianapolis.

“Today’s children face a number of challenges when it comes to healthy eating,” said Dr. Mark Jones, president of the Indianapolis American Heart Association board of directors. “Many children don’t have affordable access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and many have never learned about proper nutrition. These factors lead to poor health and rising levels of childhood obesity. We’re excited to work with Capital Group to build this Teaching Garden at Nora Elementary where it will benefit so many students.”

Nora Elementary, located in Washington Township, has 752 students representing 27 nationalities in kindergarten through fifth grade. More than 80 percent of the students qualify for free or reduced meals.

Nearly one-third of U.S. children are either overweight or obese, putting them at greater risk for developing heart disease. Teaching Gardens are part of the American Heart Association’s prevention platform to empower Americans to get healthier. Teaching Gardens were created using American Heart Association science and nutrition guidelines as well as information from gardening and education experts. The program combines nutrition education with garden-based learning.

The Teaching Garden initiative was developed in 2012 and since that time more than 260 gardens have been planted at schools across the country.
