Salsa dancers spice up healthy lifestyle options
  • Updated:Oct 17,2012

Julio Mannino and Evelin Carvajal Mexican actor Julio Mannino and his dance partner Evelin Carvajal inspired physical activity in the Latino community with their flair for salsa dancing at the Los Angeles Go Red For Women Luncheon’s Go Red Por Tu Corazón breakout session this past April.  The dynamic duo led Latinas in salsa dancing while inspiring passion to live healthy and active lives.

Julio is a participant in this season of  “Mi Sueño es Bailar”  (“My dream is to dance”) on Estrella TV.  He told the crowd he was proud to put his love of dancing to work as a volunteer for the American Heart Association and emphasized that dancing is a fun way to get the physical activity necessary while achieving – and maintaining – good health.

Evelin has been a volunteer for the Los Angeles division for several years and has been a strong advocate working to reverse the epidemic of childhood obesity, which is prevalent in the Latino community. Hundreds of local kids attended salsa dance workshops which she conducted with various youth organizations as part of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.

The Go Red Por Tu Corazón session was sponsored by White Memorial Medical Center. It drew 200 of the 800 luncheon guests and participants were excited to learn how a healthy lifestyle can help Latinos reverse heart disease and stroke risk.
