In Wisconsin during the past five years (2008-2012) the American Heart Association funded almost $14.8 million in new research:

• 6 new research studies at the BloodCenter of Wisconsin, Milwaukee at a cost of $1,059,844
• 5 new research studies at Marquette University, Milwaukee at a cost of $330,772
• 29 new research studies at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee at a cost of $3,633,156
• 7 new research studies at University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee at a cost of $857,544
• 90 new research studies at University of Wisconsin, Madison at a cost of $8,901

Nationwide, we invest over $130 million in 2012 ($3.4 billion since 1949) in heart and stroke research that has led to recent breakthroughs such as clot-busting drugs and drug-eluting stents. Healthcare providers learn about medical advances and new treatment guidelines though our journals, conferences and online courses.

The American Heart Association Midwest Affiliate funds projects that help us achieve our Impact Goal: To improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20% by the year 2020, and to reduce deaths from heart disease and stroke by 20%.

In July 2012 two non-profits were awarded Community Action Grants:
"Start with Small Changes," 16th Street Community Healthy Center, Milwaukee
"Pregnancy and Parenting Youth Program (PPYP), Milwaukee Public Schools

Applications were due February 2013; funding begins July 1, 2013.
