My name is Kyle and I am 10 years old. I live with my parents, my older brother and two younger sisters. I love to hunt deer and ducks and also enjoy playing basketball and lacrosse.
I was born with a Hypoplastic Right Ventricle, which means that my right ventricle is too small. I had two cardiac catheterizations when I was 18 months and 4 years old to help my heart continue to grow.
When I was 9, I went in for a routine yearly physical when the doctor noticed that something else was wrong.
I saw a cardiologist and went in for an MRI, where they discovered that I also have a Coronary Artery Anomaly, which means that my coronary artery was in the wrong place.
I underwent open heart surgery in January of 2012 to fix this. I went into the hospital on a Monday, was home by Thursday, and back at school by the end of the month! My friends and family were so good to me during my down time. My class made me cards and my teacher even brought them to my hospital room.
The doctors and surgeons saved my life. If they wouldn’t have discovered my problems early on or if I wouldn’t have had this surgery, I could have died from cardiac arrest while playing the sports I love. Now I can live a healthier life! I am 100% better now, and I feel very lucky that I don’t have to take any medication or have any restrictions.
Now that I am all better, I love participating in Jump Rope for Heart. I believe my story has touched so many families at my school! I have served as Heart Ambassador at my school for the past two years. I have worked hard to raise money for the American Heart Association and help others do the same, because the money we raise will help doctors learn new and better ways to help save kids like me.
