In Michigan during the past five years (2008-2012) the American Heart Association funded over $17.3 million in new research that
included 131 studies:

• 10 studies at Henry Ford Health System, Detroit at a cost of $2,273,476
• 17 studies at Michigan State University, East Lansing at a cost of $1,741,264
• 1 study at Michigan Technological University, Houghton at a cost of $308,000
• 90 studies at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor at a cost of $11,787,409
• 12 studies at Wayne State University, Detroit at a cost of $1,127,040
• 1 study at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak at a cost of $84,822

Nationwide, we invest almost $123 million a year ($3.3 billion since 1949) in heart and stroke research that has led to recent breakthroughs such as clot-busting drugs and drug-eluting stents. Healthcare providers learn about medical advances and new treatment guidelines though our journals, conferences and online courses.

The American Heart Association Midwest Affiliate funds projects that help us achieve our Impact Goal: To improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20% by the year 2020, and to reduce deaths from heart disease and stroke by 20%.

Portage, Michigan received a 2012-13 Community Action Grant from the American Heart Association for the "Get Active Portage" program. The emphasis is on the many fun, easy and inexpensive opportunities to get active and stay active.
