(DES MOINES, July 2 2012) — The American Heart Association has begun its annual Go Red BetterU Makeover Challenge in Des Moines.
As part of the annual Des Moines Go Red For Women Luncheon, 10-15 women were selected to participate in the American Heart Association’s BetterU Makeover Challenge. Applicants were selected by a committee based on a variety of criteria.
The participants will experience:
- a 12-week heart health makeover where each woman receives a cardiac risk assessment and counseling with a nurse practitioner at Iowa Heart Center
- access to a dietician from Mercy Weight Loss & Nutrition Center
- and a 12-week membership with wellness coaching at the YMCA Healthy Living Center.
- Each participant will also take part in pre and post-wellness screenings which will measure height, weight, inches, body mass index, blood pressure, cholesterol, HDL/LDL, triglycerides and blood glucose. Those same numbers will be measured at the end of the 12-week challenge and the winner will be announced at the Go Red For Women Luncheon on October 5, 2012.
“Our goal with the Challenge is to educate women about the ways they can improve their heart health,” says Monica Allen, co-chair of the BetterU Makeover Challenge. “It’s so hard, as a woman, to take the time we need to in order to be healthy. This Challenge is all about giving our participants tips and tricks so they can add heart-healthy behavior into their everyday lives.”
