Saving Strokes, a program of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, is a free event designed to encourage stroke survivors and caregivers to get out and be active.
Survivors meet others who are experiencing the same things or have previously experienced the same things in their rehabilitation. No previous golf experience is needed. Stroke survivors in all stages of recovery are welcome to hit the greens to improve their strength, flexibility and balance. In addition to golf, stroke survivors and their caregivers will enjoy a heart healthy lunch and an inspirational talk.
Stroke is the Nation’s No. 4 killer and the leading cause of severe, long-term disability. A 1999 study from the University of Chicago showed that techniques important in golf—focus, dexterity and balance—can also improve strength and flexibility for stroke survivors.
Saving Strokes is locally sponsored by Dignity Health. Dignity Health has multiple facilities in the Valley including: St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, Barrow Neurological Institute, Chandler Regional Medical Center, Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, and the new St. Joseph’s Westgate Medical Center.
