I think the best thing I could tell anyone is that if you find out you have diabetes, work with your health care professional.
I guess I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes about 15 years ago. Unfortunately, I was taking care of my husband who was very ill. I didn’t take very good care of myself. He passed away in December 2000.
At that time, I weighed about 275 lbs. I made a huge life change. I moved from Florida to Kentucky. I have lost about 50 lbs. I do my best to eat better. Exercise is hard. I have arthritis in both knees and my right shoulder.
I have remarried and I am a full time caregiver for my mother-in-law. I am trying to make it a point to also take care of myself this time. It is hard. I have health insurance and even with that, my medicine is still more than I can afford. I think my challenges are more now than before.
I think the best thing I could tell anyone is that if you find out you have diabetes, work with your health care professional. Keep all your appointments and make sure you have your lab work done when they advise you to. Follow your diet and exercise if possible. I wish I could exercise more. I am doing my best to stay on track. I want to lose about 50 or 60 lbs. and hopefully I will.
