By reading and investigating, I made a conscious decision to change my life. My advice to others with the disease is to investigate your options and become informed. You can beat this thing. I know I will.

In February of 2007, I was diagnosed with diabetes. Being considered morbidly obese and having a BMI of 46, I decided to change my life and learn more about my health.

My mom, who is now 87, is almost 95% blind due to diabetes. I do not want to end up losing my eyesight to diabetes. When I was told I had to go on medication, to bring down my blood pressure, cholesterol, and regulate the diabetes – I started to investigate other options.

After much research, I decided in January of 2008 that I was going to have an RNY gastric bypass. I also have cut back a lot of my bad eating habits and have increased my exercise from nothing to 4-5 days a week (sometimes more). It was difficult and to this date I have lost 50 pounds.

Before discovering that I had diabetes, I was an emotional eater, a couch slug, and really had an “I don’t care” attitude. I think after trying to diet and failing so many times, I had just given up and decided to accept the fact that I was never going to be thin. I guess I was my own worst enemy.

By reading and investigating, I made a conscious decision to change my life. My advice to others with the disease is to investigate your options and become informed. You can beat this thing. I know I will.
