Summary:
Since this is my year to receive my 50-year medal from the Joslin Diabetes Center, I want to live healthy to see what a 75-year medal will look like.
Actually I have “double diabetes.” I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1959. Approximately 5-6 years ago, I became resistant to the insulin I took through a pump and was started on Metformin.
Many of my half siblings have Type 2 diabetes and my father’s brother had Type 2 diabetes. High cholesterol also runs in the family and I had triple bypass surgery 12 years ago. My cholesterol is now normal due to medications. After 50 years of having diabetes, I’m still happy and healthy. I was on the thin side and then after heart surgery, started to gain weight.
I walk 2-5 miles daily. I also control my diabetes by diet, exercise, and an insulin pod. I am still somewhat overweight, but continue to work at beating the battle of the bulge. Since this is my year to receive my 50-year medal from the Joslin Diabetes Center, I want to live healthy to see what a 75-year medal will look like.
