What We Do in Michigan

Building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.
The American Heart Association is working to improve the cardiovascular health of ALL Americans by 20% while reducing deaths from cardiovascular disease and stroke by 20% by the year 2020.

Fewer people are dying from heart disease and stroke, but improving the cardiovascular health of ALL Americans has had mixed results - obesity among adults, and physical activity and cholesterol for kids.

Our My Heart. My Life.TM prevention platform includes:

  • Teaching Gardens to encourage school children to eat more fruits and vegetables
  • Cooking Classes to help parents prepare healthy meals for their families
  • Heart Walks to celebrate healthy lifestyles and fund research and health initiatives
  • Reducing sodium and sugar-sweetened beverages as personal choices and default options in the community.

Kathleen Vogelsang Grand Rapids
Years ago, Kathleen Vogelsang read a Go Red For Women news story about her friend Sharon's atypical heart attack symptoms.

She remembered them later when she had similar symptoms and got immediate care, avoiding an acute coronary event.

Kathleen now volunteers for Go Red and the Heart Ball in West Michigan.
