My name is Kaley. I am 6 years old and a student at Glenwood Elementary School. I live with my mom, dad and sister.
When I was 9 months old, my doctor noticed that I had a hole in my heart, a condition known as Atrial Septal Defect. They decided to watch it closely to see if it would improve as I grew. But as I grew, the hole got bigger.
When I was 4 years old, my family and doctor decided it would be best to close the hole in my heart. My family and I were very nervous about the surgery, but knew it was for the best. We went to Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. The nurses and doctors there were great and made it less scary. After only one day and one night at the hospital, I was fixed and on my way home!
I am so fortunate that today, doctors are able to fix common heart problems like mine using minimally invasive catheters. Because of this, my experience was much better than it could have been, and I am able to live a normal life. Because of this, I like to help by raising money for research through the Jump Rope For Heart program in my school. That way, other kids with sick hearts can have a chance to be healthy like me!RETURN TO MEET KIDS WITH HEART
