My name is Billy. I am 11 years old and I attend 5th grade at Lester Elementary in Downers Grove, Illinois. I was born with a heart murmur. My parents were told when I was born that murmurs are not uncommon in children and that I might outgrow it.
Then, when I was five, I went to the doctor for strep throat. The doctor was concerned about the sound of the murmur and felt that I should see a pediatric cardiologist. I’m glad I did, because the cardiologist said that all murmurs had a reason and that mine needed immediate attention.
Eventually, I was diagnosed with Coarctation of the Aorta, which is a narrowing of the aorta. Both the specialist and surgeon were amazed I had survived so long with this condition. My surgeon is well known for using stents in lieu of open heart surgery. The surgery went amazingly well. I’ve had one of two enlargements of my stent so far. I will probably need a bypass operation performed in the future, but not until I’ve grown up. Right now, I can do anything any other boy my age can do!
