Voices for Healthy Kids is improving the nutritional quality of snack foods and beverages in schools.
School meals are now healthier than ever, in part because thousands of parents spoke up and said they wanted better for their children. Now it’s time to take the next step to make sure all foods and beverages in schools are providing children with the nutrients they need to be successful.
Voices for Healthy Kids will work with state agencies and local school boards to support efforts to sell healthier snacks and beverages in school by:
- Helping to align state or local school nutrition standards with updated federal standards
- Exploring ways schools can go beyond the federal standards, such as by creating healthier fundraising standards or extending standards to apply to after school time
- Working with food service providers to enhance professional standards
- Making water a free, safe and easily accessible option for kids throughout the school day
The Pew Charitable Trusts is helping ensure that all foods and beverages served or sold in U.S. schools are healthy. With a long history of informing policy, Pew will support states in improving the nutrition of meals, snacks and beverages available to students across the country. Pew applies a data-driven, analytical approach to
developing strategies that make government more effective. The institution’s initiatives have delivered results at
national, state and local levels.
