Voices for Healthy Kids - Active Places

Active Places. Increasing access to parks, playgrounds, walking paths, bike lanes and other opportunities to be physically active.

Voices for Healthy Kids®: Active Places

Voices for Healthy Kids is increasing access to parks, playgrounds, walking paths, bike lanes and other opportunities to be physically active.

As part of that effort, we will work to pass and implement shared use agreements and clarify existing liability laws to encourage more schools to open their playgrounds and gyms to local communities during non-school hours.

Voices for Healthy Kids also will encourage more opportunities for physical activity for kids and adults by:
  • identifying ways in which state policy can support safe routes to school programs and infrastructure;
  • collaborating with state departments of transportation to ensure that federal dollars for safe routes to school programs are effectively used; and
  • promoting “complete streets” initiatives that integrate bike and pedestrian paths into the road-planning and construction process.
Our Expert:

The Safe Routes to School National Partnership is working to increase access to safe spaces for physical activity. The National Partnership brings together more than 650 national, state and local organizations and networks to advance policies and programs that increase access to parks, playgrounds, walking paths, bike lanes and other opportunities to be physically active. With a focus on shared use and street-scale policies, these efforts engage communities and mobilize people to overcome the lack of time for physical activity at schools and to increase opportunities for active transportation in underserved communities.
